Klein Predicts Liberal Minority Win

Prominent network television coverage emphasized a prediction from Alberta Premier Ralph Klein that the Liberal Party will win another minority government in the upcoming election.
News reports featured Premier Klein’s assessment that the election will be won or lost in Ontario. Klein said voters in Canada’s largest province still view Conservative Leader Stephen Harper as too right wing.
Print and television coverage interpreted Premier Klein’s remarks as a negative blow to Conservative election chances and a boost to the Liberals, just as their minority government is poised to be defeated.

Globe and Mail front page coverage warned Liberal campaign strategists plan a wave of negative attack ads against Conservative Leader Stephen Harper after New Year’s in the closing stages of the campaign. The news report speculated Liberals will set a longer-than-usual campaign to provide more time for voters to sour on Harper.
Premier Klein’s prediction for a Liberal minority win washed over an announcement that Allan Cutler, the sponsorship scandal whistleblower, will run as a candidate for the Conservative Party against Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty’s brother David, the incumbent Liberal MP in Ottawa South.
Developing media coverage will focus Thursday on the motion of non-confidence to be debated in the House of Commons, spelling the end of the minority Liberal government when it comes to a vote late Monday.
News reports will also provide prominent attention to a two-day First Ministers’ Meeting on aboriginal issues in Kelowna, B.C.
